Windows System Restore is often one of the only solutions. i use the cloud dropboxes as another mentioned and have found those to be a godsend in terms of ensuring life isn't over when your pc dies. I don't have any Windows disks (it's 2 years old and I'm fairly sure I wasn't provided any), so I'm trying to do it through advanced boot options. Since then I've never needed anti-virus, System Restore or any such thing and I've never had a blue screen of death or a black screen of death or any other screen

I have used System Restore many times but I have found that it works best in the Safe Mode otherwise you may get the message at the end of the process: System Restore Did Not Complete Successfully 0x80070005 Now type 'reset' in the search bar and select 'Reset this PC' on the left when th results appear.
